What Happens to Your Car After Hitting a Pothole? The Damage You Can't Always See 

Most drivers know the feeling.


You are driving along, the road looks clear enough and then suddenly there is a pothole. There is a bang, the steering wheel jolts and, after a quick glance at the tyres, everything appears to be fine.


But not all pothole damage is immediately obvious.


A hard impact can put a significant amount of force through the tyre and wheel and into the hub, wheel bearing, steering and suspension systems. Sometimes the result is obvious straight away. Sometimes a component has been damaged or stressed without showing an obvious sign until days or weeks later.


For workshops, that makes post-impact diagnosis particularly important.


The tyre isn't always the part that takes the damage

The wheel and tyre absorb the initial impact, but the force doesn't stop there. It travels through the hub, bearing, suspension and steering components.


A pothole can therefore affect several parts of the vehicle at once.


Control arms, ball joints, suspension bushes and stabiliser links can all be exposed to impact forces. Steering components such as tie rod ends and inner tie rods can also be affected, particularly where an impact changes wheel alignment or creates play in a joint.


Wheel bearings can be affected too. A severe impact can place excessive loads on the bearing's internal components, potentially causing damage that only becomes noticeable later. Nakata identifies potholes, kerbs and road debris as potential causes of wheel bearing impact damage.


That is why a vehicle can leave a workshop after a pothole strike with no obvious tyre problem but still have an issue worth investigating.


Why does the steering feel different after hitting a pothole?

One of the most useful clues is a change in how the vehicle feels.


The steering might suddenly feel less precise, the vehicle may pull to one side or the steering wheel may no longer sit straight when driving on a level road.


That doesn't automatically mean a steering component has failed. Wheel alignment can be affected by an impact, while damaged or worn steering and suspension components can also change how the vehicle behaves.


A control arm, for example, connects the chassis to the steering knuckle and helps control wheel movement while maintaining alignment and stability. Damage to the arm, its bushings or associated ball joint can affect alignment and handling.


Steering components such as inner tie rods and tie rod ends can also be affected. These components transfer steering input to the wheels, so excessive play or damage can influence steering precision and vehicle stability.


This is where listening to the customer's description can be just as useful as the visual inspection. A new knock over bumps, vibration through the steering wheel or a vehicle that suddenly feels different can all help point the technician towards the area that needs closer attention.


The wheel bearing may not complain immediately

Wheel bearing damage can be particularly difficult to identify after an impact because the symptoms may develop gradually.


A damaged bearing can produce a humming, rumbling or grinding noise that changes with vehicle speed. There may also be vibration, wheel play or, where the bearing incorporates a sensor, an ABS or traction control warning light.


The important thing is not to assume that every new noise following a pothole is a wheel bearing.


Tyres, brakes, suspension and other rotating components can produce similar symptoms. Diagnosis should establish where the noise or vibration is actually coming from before a replacement bearing is fitted.


Suspension damage can be easier to hear than see

Suspension components are constantly moving, so damage doesn't always result in something visibly broken.


A worn or damaged stabiliser link can produce a clunk or knocking noise over bumps. A control arm or ball joint issue can affect steering feel, wheel alignment and tyre wear. Damaged suspension bushes can introduce additional movement, vibration or noise.

There isn't one component that should automatically be replaced after hitting a pothole.

The right approach is to establish what has actually been affected.


Alongside checking the tyre and wheel, it is worth considering wheel bearing condition, ball joints, control arms, suspension bushes, stabiliser links, inner tie rods, tie rod ends where the symptoms or impact suggest they may have been affected.


Look for play, damage, deformation, split or deteriorated protective boots, unusual movement and signs of uneven tyre wear. If the vehicle is pulling to one side or the steering wheel position has changed, alignment should also be considered.


And if a component has suffered a significant impact, don't rely solely on whether it looks damaged. Some problems only become apparent when the component is checked for movement or performance.


September is a good time to pay attention

Potholes aren't a seasonal problem, but September is an interesting point in the year to think about their impact.


UK roads have already experienced months of wear, while the transition towards wetter conditions brings another set of challenges. Recent RAC figures highlighted a rise in pothole-related breakdowns during July to September, making the end of summer a useful point to consider the condition of steering and suspension components.


For workshops, that means a customer coming in with a vibration, knocking noise or unusual tyre wear may have a story that starts several weeks earlier with one particularly unpleasant impact.


A thorough inspection of the wheel, bearing, steering and suspension systems can help identify problems that may otherwise go unnoticed, helping ensure the vehicle leaves the workshop safe, correctly aligned and performing as it should.
